The flute traces the lines of the song like a shadow: at the same time, but also in advance or afterwards.
There are many variations of the “unison” of two voices, often the flute participates only rudimentarily in the melodic events - then again it is the rhythmic “engine”, the driving force; other times, as a quiet pedal point, it gives the song support and a friction surface, provides a “cue”; and last but not least, it lets the voice catch its breath when it emancipates itself in interludes.
